Just last week Utah launched two free applications for the iPhone, making them the first smart phone state government.
The first app, Utah.gov, allows you to quickly find state agencies and services, plus news about the state. The Utah Professional License Lookup allows you to check to see if someone you're thinking about having do work for you is licensed by the state.
Marshall Kirkpatrick over at web-centric ReadWriteWeb argues that governments shouldn't be paying to create iPhone apps during a recession. I couldn't disagree with him more. Anything that makes government more accessible, available and efficient for the public is worth investing in. The good news is that 80+ percent of his readers disagree with him too. (Add your vote.)
I do agree with Kirkpatrick that web and cell phone applications that are available to more people on more platforms would be better. Where's the app for the Google phone? What about text-based information shared via other phones?
What kinds of services do you provide that could be done via cell phone?
What government services do you use that you would like to access via your phone?
